Axis Theatre is accepting submissions from actors for the role of SPA:TH/THEQA:T (Bear/Tree) for our upcoming touring production of “Th’owxiya: The Hungry Feast Dish” by Kwantlen playwright Joseph A. Dandurand.

Immerse yourself in the legend of the basket ogress, Th’owxiya, an old hungry spirit that inhabits in a feast dish full of bountiful delicious foods. This Kwantlen First Nations tale follows a sly Mouse (Kw’at’el) who is caught stealing cheese from this feast dish. To appease an angry Th’owxiya, Kw’at’el embarks on a journey to find two children for the ogress to eat, or else!

CONTRACT DATES: Rehearsal dates: September 4 – 17, 2023. Tour dates: September 18 – December 9, 2023. The production will tour to the following provinces: Saskatchewan, Ontario, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

All artists will be engaged under a CTA form of contract, specifically Article 55:00 Theatre for Young Audiences. Submissions from Equity and non-Equity performers are welcome. Accommodations are arranged and per diems are supplied for any out-of-town touring and runouts as per the CTA. All performers who work with Axis Theatre are required to get a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check.

AUDITION DATES: May 8 – 12, 2023 on Granville Island, Vancouver, BC and over ZOOM.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
SPA:TH/THEQA:T (All genders - Indigenous/First Nations/Métis/Inuit)
An innocent leader determined to find their parents. Will also play a Storyteller role.

Please note, this is a physical piece that requires animal physicality, drumming, and singing.

Auditionees will need to prepare a scene/monologue from the script and one contemporary monologue running two minutes in length and a song of their choosing running no longer than a minute. They may choose to perform their song as a cappella or bring an instrument. (Sides will be provided prior to the audition.)

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Able to lift 50 lbs (23 kg).
- Holds a Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent.
- Previous touring experience is preferred but not required.
- Has a positive attitude and a team-centered mentality.
