SFU Woodward's Presents the 8th Annual BAH! HUMBUG!

  • Goldcorp Centre for the Arts 149 West Hastings Street Vancouver, BC, V6B Canada (map)

In the heart of wealthy Vancouver, sits the “poorest postal code in Canada”. The once proud neighborhood is now feared as a place of destitution, its historical importance widely overlooked. How did such a vital part of our city become so neglected?

Bah! Humbug! challenges these issues and more in a heart-warming adaptation of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. Dickens’ timeless classic remains relevant today, the economic disparities of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside echoing that of Victorian London. This production addresses the true history of the downtown Eastside, the oldest neighborhood of Vancouver and the place where the city began. Bah! Humbug! journeys into understanding Canada’s most resilient people, and celebrates the transformative power of human redemption. “Charity begins at home,” said Dickens, “and justice begins next door”.

Performed by a talented cast of 10 actors and 2 musicians, including Jim Byrnes, Juno-award winning singer and actor, as Scrooge; Renae Morriseau as Mrs. Cratchit and the Narrator; and Tom Pickett, renowned gospel and blues singer, as Bob Cratchit.

Bah! Humbug! is directed by James Fagan Tait, winner of mutiple Jessie Richardson Awards. The set design features the work of Strathcona-based artist Richard Tetrault, responsible for over 40 public mural projects in the city.
